Sufficient Swiss tomatoes available

Once again the circumstances proved that vegetable producers depend very much on the weather. Luckily, the Swiss tomatoes grew particularly well during the first warm spring weather and their quality is excellent.

Consumers are full of enthusiasm for the freshly harvested tomatoes. Tomatoes are popular in Switzerland, and they come second after the most popular vegetable, carrots. However if you add the sales of all the different tomato varieties, such as cherry, vine and plum, then tomatoes are the most popular. In 2016 the consumption of tomatoes was 6.93 kilos per person, and a total of 57,695 metric tons was sold in stores. With a market share of 58%, more than half of the tomatoes come from Switzerland. The season for Swiss tomatoes is between April and November, but only in June the yield is large enough to cover the total demand in Switzerland.

Tomatoes contain vitamin C, minerals and carotene, and can be eaten raw or cooked. The range of tomatoes varies greatly in color, shape and variety, from large Coeur de Boeuf or yellow cherry tomatoes to the classic vine tomatoes, which are still the biggest seller.

Due to innovative and modern production methods tomato cultivation is sustainable, with respect for nature and care for natural resources. Tomato producers take care to promote this attitude, so they can offer Swiss customers the best quality, every day of the year. Their customers have the guarantee that if they buy Swiss tomatoes, they buy a healthy product produced in Switzerland.
