Fiji pineapple production shows potential

Fiji's pineapple industry has a lot of potential, with the present production figure standing at around 2800 tonnes annually. Andre McGregor, managing director of Koko Siga Pacific, said the fruit was sold to local markets, earning the 915 growers involved in production about $2.4 million a year.

A leader in the pineapple farming sector, Mr McGregor believes there is scope to develop farming, production and sales even further.

He said opportunities have been identified to sustainably expand Fiji's pineapple industry by increasing yields, extending seasonal availability and improving product quality through improvement of pineapple husbandry practices.

"It has long been recognised that substantial opportunities exist to expand Fiji's pineapple sales both for local consumption and for export including fresh and processed products," he said.

"However, the underpinning requirements for realising these opportunities are to expand the seasonal availability of pineapples, to increase yields and for farmers to adopt appropriate soil conservation measures.
