Myanmar mango growers seek weather insurance

Mango orchard owners, who export their fruit, are on the lookout for an insurance scheme that will provide protection against crop damage due to weather changes.

Myanmar Mango Market and Technology Development Organisation secretary U Kyaw Soe Naing said the mango growers want a plan that can offset losses caused by the unpredictable weather that results in price fluctuations.

Speaking to The Myanmar Times, he said, “Last year, the mangoes orchards in Kyaukse and Singaing townships were hit by hailstones. About K900 million in crop yield was lost, according to media reports. They did not have any fruits, as the damage was extensive. This year, hailstones struck again for the second year causing massive crop damage.

“Mango trees usually blossom in November and December. This year, the cold season was unusually warm. As a result, there were two blossoms this year. Actually Sein Talone mango trees bear fruits only once a year. This year they bore fruits twice with a four or five day gap,” he said.
