Germany: Vegetable patches for kids: small gardeners - big successes

Roll up your sleeves and get to the vegetable patch! The EDEKA Foundation project "Vegetable patches for kids" is now entering the new season. A record-breaking 180,000 kindergarten children are growing their own vegetables in raised beds from April to June, which have been made available by the Foundation. The goal is to strengthen the nutritional competence and responsibility of children whilst they are of kindergarten age. The long-term project is growing continuously: around 1,850 kindergartens and day-care centers are taking part this season, and the number of vegetable patches formed since 2008 is currently 2,750.

Fun in the matter: Child-friendly promotion of nutrition education
Since 2008, the EDEKA Foundation has been providing kindergartens with seedlings, soil, vegetable beds, seeds and gardening tools. A particularly important success factor is the fun the children have with the vegetable garden project. " The knowledge about our food and its origin should be promoted at an early age and for children. This creates a solid foundation for a more conscious diet", emphasizes Markus Mosa, CEO of the EDEKA Foundation. Under expert guidance, mini-gardeners can plant, sow, dig, water and watch as their vegetables grow.

Support from energetic sponsors
Local EDEKA merchants are especially committed to supporting the EDEKA Foundation and the kindergartens. As sponsors, they follow the project, help the mini-gardeners with planting and also water the plants at weekends. They give tips on how to prepare the vegetables so that children who tend to prefer pizza, pasta or chips would give broccoli and spinach a second chance.
