The high yields of the current potato crop in Ciego de Avila guarantees producers will have potato seeds for the next season. It will also be sufficient to satisfy the demands of the only pre-fried potato plant in the country, which allows sales at the border and to tourists.
The harvest was higher than planned, despite the negative effects of drought and the lack of supplies for this production, as only four provinces are responsible for the crop.
The current collections are aimed at gathering seeds for some 300 hectares planned for the next season with national seeds, according to Rolando Fernandez Florenten, Production Manager of Base El Mambi Business Unit. He also said that in order to continue with the 2017-2018 plan, the country should plant a good amount of national potato, which is why they complied with the 234 tons of the seed program.
The agricultural companies La Cuba, Arnaldo Ramirez, and la Integral will have to contribute some 7,000 tons of potatoes for the processing industry of pre-fried potatoes, which requires a certain caliber and volume to maintain production throughout the year.
