Geographic tags on mangoes to help combat fakes in India

In order to combat fakes, Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso mangoes will soon carry geographical indication (GI) tags which will identify a shipments legitimacy.

A geographical indication (GI) is a name or sign used on certain products which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin. Hence, Alphonso will now only be sold by farmers from the Ratnagiri and Devgad area of Konkan in Maharashtra by using the tag GI tag. The tag will ensure that mangoes from any other place are not sold as the special mangoes from Ratnagiri.

"Farmers won't have to bear losses when cheaper varieties of mangoes are sold as Ratnagiri or Devgad Alphonsos and GI tagging will also benefit consumers who can be assured of not being cheated," Ganesh Hingmire, who represents the Kelshi Parisar Amba Utpadak Sahakari Sangha, said.
