Indian foodies driving sales of new mango varieties

Nagpur, India might be known internationally as the Orange city, but it is the mangoes that rule the hearts and markets too.

Director of the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) Rajesh Chhabrani, reported that, "During the entire mango season in summer, people of Nagpur consume almost 10000 tonne mangoes. The peak season lasts between 45-60 days, but foodies make the most of this short duration."

The ever growing urge for something new has led to the demand for some truly unique varieties of mangoes. Chhabrani, a third generation wholesaler of Kalamna market, says, "My elders had told me that there are 360 varieties of mangoes across India, although most of the people don't get to see more than 40 popular ones in their lifetime. But now I see a craze for new varieties growing; that is why we have new entrants like Madhuri and Mallika, named after Bollywood actresses — Madhuri Dixit and Mallika Sherawat, respectively."

A retailer at Dharampeth market, Shaheen Khan, says, "We have foodies coming to us for gulab khas, pairi along with early crop of dassehri and hapuz. Totapari is favoured with those who make jams, pickles and squashes at home."
