Responses Arnoud Klootwijk (Ben van der Waal) and Ronnie Moorman (Willem Dijk)

Easter boosts sales, but weather and timing are also important

Will Easter boost sales of fresh produce a bit more? Which products are most popular and how to anticipate the holidays as a wholesaler? We asked Ronnie Moorman from Willem Dijk AGF and Arnoud Klootwijk from Ben van der Waal. “Easter definitely boosts sales, as will the lovely weather we’ve been having. For example, asparagus, strawberries and other soft fruit such as raspberries are very popular. Cress is also becoming more popular with our catering customers. Our ripening facility is full of product for our customers. Mangoes and avocados are also sold more often around these days,” Arnoud says.

Ronnnie also says asparagus and strawberries are popular products. “But new potatoes as well of course, there’s much demand for small new potatoes. Easter definitely causes an additional boost. The weather should give an even larger boost, but Easter is a great week for us.” He says the timing of Easter is also of importance. “Last year, Easter was two weeks earlier, so that we were too early with asparagus and fair volumes of strawberries from Dutch soil. We are doing better now. We expect a perfect week!”

“We don’t really have Easter promotions, but we do have a complete range with only the best quality, and besides, we have varying action batches every day, which we can sell for better prices,” Arnoud says. Willem Dijk also doesn’t really anticipate Easter promotions. “Retailers ask for special Easter products to do something with, but it would be better to have the shop appearance at its best during Easter. We personally annually give our customers a small gift at Easter. We make sure that we have plenty of stock, so that we never have to tell our customers ‘no’ during Easter. We do everything possible to guarantee a complete range. Expensive is better than no supply at all,” Ronnie concludes.
