Piet van Vugt: Dutch cultivation profits from late Easter

“Good availability of herbs before Easter”

Van Vugt Kruiden expects peak periods again this week before Easter. “Demand for herbs has been good in recent months. We have noticed that restaurants are receiving more visitors again.” “In January and February, availability of some types of herbs was tricky, because our production in southern Europe was also affected by the unfavourable weather circumstances. This mostly concerned mint and coriander, but because our production areas are spread out properly, shortages were limited,” Piet van de Vugt says.

“We daily work on filling our customers’s orders completely, which is a challenge every time. An advantage is that Easter isn’t early this year. The Dutch cultivation profits from this. The first seed herbs will be harvested in our own greenhouses this week. The herbs are looking well and we hope to be fully in production within a few weeks. The outdoor cultivation isn’t quite ready yet. That is being sown and planted now, under good circumstances,” Piet continues.

“The cultivation of edible flowers expands again this year. We are having our area grow along with the increasing demand of our customers. We grow our product based on demand. This requires a tight cultivation schedule, which is therefore often revised due to weather circumstances. But that makes it exiting and fun,” Piet concludes.
