Australian farmer exports special date to the Middle East

A Central Australian farm has exported 200 boxes of a special type of date called the Yellow Khalal Barhi variety to the Middle East this year, in addition to their usual domestic market supply. The variety have found their way all the way to Lebanon and Qatar.

Ben Wall, from the Tamara Date Farm Cooperative who runs the farm, said this variety was special as it was one of the only types of date you could eat in the Khalal state of ripening at that time.

"Dates have about five stages of ripening, and most people eat them in the Rutab and Tamar stage when they're brown. But the Barhi is the main one you can eat in the Khalal stage," he said.

"In The Middle East it's a real delicacy to have the yellow date. Because we're in the off season to the Northern Hemisphere it's quite a special treat," he said.

Despite seeing setbacks from birds and insects this year on production, the farm hopes to grow international sales into the future and export to more countries.
