Spain: Fuerteventura harvested 2,500 tons of tomatoes

This year Fuerteventura harvested 2,500 tons of tomatoes, and the sector has already sent a first shipment of this product to the ports of Southampton (United Kingdom) and Rotterdam (Holland), according to data from the Gran Tarajal Agricultural Cooperative.

The president of the council of Fuerteventura, Marcial Morales, and its Minister of Agriculture, Juan Estarico, visited the packing plant of Tuineje this week. Every day, this plant prepares 25 tons of exportable tomatoes for the 59 members of the Gran Tarajal Coop.

"Now that another tomato harvest in Fuerteventura is over, we have the challenge of continuing to supply water to farmers at 0.60 euro. We also have to keep working on the marketing channels and the investment that we have in place to install a marketing warehouse in the Llanos of La Higuera," Morales said.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Agriculture said that this year's harvest had been better than last season's harvest, "because the majorero tomato achieved better prices in the European markets."
