Waitrose increases banana prices by 4.1%

Recent floods, which wiped out plantations in the Caribbean, have sent the prices of bananas in the UK shooting up. Today supmarket chain Waitrose became the first to increase prices 4.1% from 72p a kilo to 75p.

Other stores like Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons are expected to follow suit to maintain profitability. Waitrose also attributed the price increase to the fall in Sterling’s value which has hit import prices.

Analysts Mintec said UK import prices for bananas have risen to £810 a ton, up nearly 18% since March 2016.

Alistair Smith, of international co-ordination group NGO Banana Link is optomistic about the increase as he believes it will help farmers: “This price increase is a step in the right direction and means growers will lose less money per box.

“But costs for growers are rising much faster than retail prices in the UK and I would urge other retailers to follow Waitrose.”
