Philippines: Official urges Australia to lift import ban on bananas

Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez III is attempting to get Australia to lift their long-standing ban on Philippine banana imports. In a meeting with Australian Foreign Minister Julia Bishop last March 16-17 in Manila, he urged the representative to reconsider their stance and explained the work they had gone through to meet Australia's standards.

“As a former Minister of Agriculture, I will raise with you the issue of the banana imports. We have been working at that for 20 years, probably. And we have not been able to ship to you a single box of bananas,” he told Ms. Bishop, the Finance department said in a statement.

“Japan accepts our bananas, China accepts our bananas, even the Middle East accepts our bananas,” Mr. Dominguez added.

As of January, fresh bananas were the Philippine's 15th largest export valued at $41.91 million.
