China: New pest control system brings great benefits

The results of a study have shown that soil-borne diseases, such as Fusarium Wilt and root knot nematodes, and toxic substances, like cinnamic acid, are the main causes of continuing problems for crops. For the first time, it has been revealed that the synergistic action of the toxin and the pathogen multiply the problems and an effective removal technology of self toxic substances, based on microbial degradation and biophysical adsorption, have been successfully implemented.

This project's aim was to develop a new technology of high temperature, high humidity and biomass coupling. The high temperature anaerobic environment and the degradation of glucosinolates and other antibacterial substances were coupled to improve the pest killing effect to above 95%. It was also found that the mechanism of resistance to the root system was induced by the systemic transmission of sterols through the signal transmission between the leaves and roots.

The construction of a prevention and control technology system has great social and economic benefits. Between 2013-2015, in Shandong, Henan, Hebei, Zhejiang and Fujian provinces, it was used on 13 million 466 thousand acres, and improved production by 550 - 2722 yuan per mu. The economic benefits reached 22 billion 64 million yuan. High technology radiation was used on nearly 70% of vegetables and, over three years, saved 2 billion 790 million yuan of pesticide and fertilizer
