Sales of savoy cabbage marginalising

“It's rarely possible to make any permanent agreements for the sales of savoy cabbage,” says Peter Stafleu from Best of Four. “The trade therefore has to go on the free (day) market, and that has not yet turned out to be profitable. The fact that cells are filled for long periods after harvest because there is hardly any or no demand, resulted in many savoy cabbage cultivators deciding to not plant savoy cabbage this year. Should demand arise again, and with it a permanent agreement, cultivation could be arranged again.”

Package per week
You therefore have to go to greengrocer’s specialist shops for savoy cabbage. It can only be ordered from Albert Heijn out of all of the online supermarkets in the Netherlands. Retail traders don’t have much demand for it either, Kelly van Aarle from Gebroeders Van Aarle, who own two retail shops, confirms. “It is a very small product. You should be happy if you sell one package of it per week. We place three savoy cabbages on the shelves per day at most, and I also sell halves. I personally process everything that remains unsold.”
