Arrival of first South African organic pumpkins

Q-Cape offers retailers in the Netherlands and Germany a sustainable and flavourful product with the introduction of organic, orange pumpkins from South Africa. According to manager Leo Stoker, of the company from Dronten, their cultivation offers advantages compared to that in Europe and South America.

The first sea containers carrying the orange product have just arrived in the Netherlands. The pumpkins are currently being washed and sorted elsewhere in Flevoland. The company traditionally has contact with fruit and vegetable growers in South Africa. Q-Cape regularly visits these production companies in order to make good agreements regarding cultivation, supply and the organisation. The advantages are plentiful, according to Stoker, such as the South African climate. “We have cooperations there in various cultivation areas, each with their own sub-climate.That results in good circumstances for the cultivation over a longer period. We can therefore offer a stable quality. The flavour of the South African pumpkin is sweet, and because of that, very flavourful.”

The cultivation of Q-Cape meets European quality standards. An added advantage is that the transportation time is shorter than with import from other parts in the world with similar circumstances. Stoker expects a quick increase in the cooperation. “Demand for this crop is increasing. It is a fair product, and consumers increasingly see possibilities to use it. It is not just soup anymore, it can also be excellently used in a salad or on the barbecue.”
