New Zealand Kiwi Growers soon to increase independent monitoring

Independent monitoring and analysis of the kiwifruit industry's performance by New Zealand Kiwifruit Growers Inc will significantly increase in the coming months, as the Kiwifruit Industry Strategy Project recommendations are implemented.

NZKGI chairman Doug Brown says this is part of NZKGI's ongoing programme of monitoring industry stakeholders to ensure the best interests of kiwifruit growers are kept top of the mind in industry decision making.

Of particular focus will be the implementation KISP recommendations, industry performance and assisting grower access to clear data.

Doug says last year New Zealand kiwifruit growers delivered a very solid mandate for the future ownership, control and structure of the industry through the Kiwifruit Industry Strategy Project referendum.

Two thirds of New Zealand growers took part in the vote and of these, 91 per cent supported the 10 propositions and 98 per cent supported the industry's Single Point of Entry structure.

“Growers could not have experienced the success we are having at the moment was it not for the Single Point of Entry structure that Zespri executes.

“Kiwifruit growers have valued Zespri's contribution to the industry since its inception and continue to support the SPE as illustrated in the KISP referendum which resulted in 98 per cent of growers voting to keep it.

“The SPE not only ensures New Zealand kiwifruit are marketed as a premium product on the world stage, but it ultimately gives confidence for growers to invest in the industry.

“From this perspective, I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate Zespri who are celebrating 20 years of their brand this year and are hosting their biannual conference, Momentum on Friday,” says Doug.

“The service that NZKGI provides to growers to advocate, protect and enhance the interests of kiwifruit growers and the success of our sector is dependent on the continuance of a transparent relationship with Zespri and other stakeholders in the kiwifruit industry,” says Doug.

Indications are that 2017 will be another big kiwifruit harvest.

“New Zealand kiwifruit will have the opportunity to feed new markets, to become an even more dominant fresh fruit on the world stage,” he says.
