Italy: High-quality green beans from Senegal

They come from Senegal, where they are cultivated using Italian techniques, and are harvested and processed by hand. We are talking about counter-seasonal green beans. The leading Italian company in this sector is "Giorgini Vittorio" from Cesenatico (Forlì-Cesena), which has been helping various Senegalese businesses for years.

"In winter, the market requires high-quality produce and we are able to supply it. Most of it is supplied to retailers in 500 gram bags, or packaged to be sold loose. Small quantities are available in flow-packed trays."

500 gram bags are currently selling at €2.40-2.50.

In Senegal, producers follow the protocols supplied by Giorgini. Harvesting is carried out by hand and that's why the produce has such a long shelf-life. Sorting and packaging operations are also carried out by hand. Of course, labour is very cheap.

Most of the transport is carried out on trucks. From Senegal to Mauritania and Morocco, then on to Spain on ferries. From there, green-beans reach Emilia-Romagna. The transfer takes 6-7 days. It would take 24 hours less by sea, but ships can only be loaded once a week.

Transport by air would be too expensive and poses logistics problems, as more delicate products, such as fish, take precedence, so beans always risk unplanned stops.

"All cultivation material is shipped from Italy. We control the management, cultivation and processing, which are carried out following our own standards," explains owner Vittorio Giorgini.
