Peter Wijnen, Frankort&Koning:

"Leek market has been fine for the whole season"

The leek producers and traders are not complaining this year. “The leek prices are around 80 cents at the moment. This is the lowest price we have had in weeks. As regards demand, we are going through a tough period, but the prospects towards the end of the season are good. March and April could become some great months for finishing the season. Many producers are ahead of schedule. Due to the good prices, everyone has been going at it for 100% and because of this it might happen that some producers end the season sooner than expected,” says Peter Wijnen of Frankort&Koning.

“Right now, the sales are relatively quiet, but that applies to multiple products after the extreme veggie shortages of the past month. The prices are relatively up to standard. Only from the Belgian Roeselaere, there are larger numbers available. In that area, they traditionally switch to leek production from industry vegetables,” says Peter.

“The local production in many producing countries is over because of the climate conditions and this causes quite a broad demand from all over Europe. After a reasonable season last year, we have had a good season this year, with prices peaking up to 2 euros per kilo. The expectation is that there will not be a smaller supply in the next season,” Peter concludes.
