Philippine city looks to become a potato producer

The city government of Zamboanga, through the City Agriculture Office, has embarked on potato seedling production, in line with a goal to make Zamboanga City a major producer of potatoes.

City Agriculturist Diosdado Palacat said the office has purchased 2,000 potato tubers from Bukidnon for seedling production, which is being done in an area in the village of La Paz, Zamboanga City.

Palacat said La Paz would be an ideal place for the cultivation of potatoes with its cool temperatures. Palacat added that the seedlings will be distributed to the farmers for mass cultivation and production of potato.

The first harvest of the locally produced potato is expected on November or December this year and the city agriculturist said the prices are expected to decrease to P40 a kilo once the locally produced potatoes hit the market.
