India urges the US to ease mango import standards

The Indian government is petitioning the United States to lessen the current phytosanitary norms that have effected India’s exports of mangoes as there have been instances of Indian consignments of the fruit being returned by the US for alleged non-adherrence to the phytosanitary norms.

“A US law delegation, on a visit to India, has agreed to carry out the checks in India,” said a commerce ministry official. These tests are currently done in the US and by performing these tests in India it will make the process cheaper for Indian exporters.

“We will set up two centres for all the checks. If the consignment fulfills the criteria then it would be sent to the US, otherwise it would be returned to the exporter,” the official added.
