Research reveals best white asparagus varieties for temperate climates

Optimal use of Limgroup range
In addition to choosing the right plot and preparing the soil, deciding which variety of asparagus to grow is a crucial decision that should be taken before the new plot is planted.

Limgroup has categorised asparagus growing according to the cultivation method and product specific characteristics. This article provides information about white asparagus varieties shown to be best for production in temperate climates.

White asparagus varieties in temperate climate zones:
The quickest start with Frühlim, Gijnlim and Avalim Frühlim, Gijnlim and Avalim are the earliest varieties in Limgroup's range. These hybrids stand out for their early initial production, and also their rapid development meaning that production soon reaches a high level. The use of mini tunnels is recommended to bring production even further forward.

Frühlim
An unparalleled new mini tunnel variety, Frühlim combines very early production with spear thickness and quality. Its tightly closed tips make Frühlim ideal for cultivation in mini tunnels, or under other forms of thermal mulches. Frühlim also performs well and produces high-quality asparagus under various types of covers. Frühlim 's very uniform foliage is dark green, erect and vigorous.

Gijnlim
This is the standard early variety with high production capacity and outstanding quality making Gijnlim the ideal choice for fertile clay soils or sandy plots where irrigation is possible. Gijnlim produces high-quality, elegant spears of asparagus. Gijnlim is a variety that growers can rely on for high yields year after year.

Avalim
Avalim has an average spear weight that is 15% higher than Gijnlim. The higher spear weight of Avalim offers particular benefits on less vigorous plots. Avalim is the ideal variety for growers who value flavour. Avalim is always rated as having an excellent flavour, making it perfect for selling direct from the farm. Avalim has an authentic appearance, and offers good traits such as resistance to pink discolouration and foliage diseases.

Grolim
This variety is suitable for cultivation of white asparagus in both temperate climate zones and in climates similar to South Europe. Grolim is a perfect “high yield” variety. Its exceptionally high spear weight makes an important contribution to reducing labour costs. This medium-early variety gives above average production. Grolim performs optimally under warm and fertile conditions, giving high quality and high production yields. Grolim is ideal for use with black-white sheeting or sheeting used to force early production.

Herkolim
An excellent choice for late harvesting, or harvesting in the second half of the season, Herkolim offers high planting densities and has a very high production potential, which translates to lower labour costs per kilo of asparagus. Herkolim offers very good quality traits for resistance to physiological rust, good flavour, low sensitivity to hollow stems and suitability for replanting. Good black/white sheeting management will ensure high-quality asparagus production even in warmer climate conditions.

Backlim
In the white asparagus variety spectrum, Backlim has been a well-known name for years. The variety offers reliable yields and quality combined with a very long productive life. Backlim is the ideal performer for a stable harvest right until the end of the season. Backlim will continue to produce well in the second half of May and into June.

This variety has tightly closed tips, good spear thickness and good yields. Backlim has a proven track record of reliability. For many years it has been considered the market standard for late growing, replanting and heated indoor and outdoor cultivation methods. Backlim has a very long, profitable productive life. Backlim is a reliable and robust variety.
