Since its creation more than a decade ago, Tropical Millenium has specialised in the marketing of tropical fruits, especially avocados and mangoes, although for several years it has also decided to give papayas a shot, as they are increasingly appreciated by consumers. They have a high fibre content that improves digestion, soothes the pain and inflammation of the stomach, thanks to an enzyme called papain, they are good for the skin and contain plenty of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
The Malaga-based company already sells about 500 tonnes of this fruit, mostly through Mercadona (and thus in the domestic market). This figure is not comparable to the volume of avocados (5,000 tonnes) and mangoes (3,500 tonnes) sold annually by the company, but it is growing year after year. Tropical Millenium markets mainly papayas from Brazil, the Canary Islands and Malaga. It focuses on the Tainung 1 variety; a very sweet, orange-coloured hybrid papaya that is characterised by its coffee flavour. So much so, that the manager of the firm assures that "good papayas taste like coffee."
Tropical Millenium, which attends Fruit Logistica with its own stand, has closed 2016 with the best economic results in its history: 22 million Euros in turnover, compared to 18.35 million in 2015, and nine million kilos of fruit, half of which has gone to foreign markets. Like most companies in the sector, it combines imported fruit with domestic fruit. Avocados are the most exported, with 70% of the production shipped overseas, while in the case of mangoes and papayas 60% of the production is intended for the domestic market.
