Potatoes likely to stay steady until summer

After initially having challenges such as rain during the harvest season, potato supply out of Wisconsin is looking steady for now. “Our farm has been shipping fresh potatoes since last fall but we’re still shipping potatoes to McCain’s and have few potatoes in storage for the Little Potato Company,” says Andy Diercks from Coloma, Wisc.-based Coloma Farms, Inc.

In fact, there’s nothing little about that company—the LPC announced last year it was opening a new $20 million U.S. Head Office and processing facility in DeForest, Wisc. To supplement the company’s Canadian head office in Edmonton, Alta. “The Little Potato Plant opening up here is something we’re very excited about,” says Diercks.

Overcoming storage challenges
After the initial rainy harvest season created some storage challenges, Diercks notes that those left now in storage are holding well. “Though a fair bit of reds were lost because they got hit with an exceptional amount of rain,” he adds.

That said, yields are down slightly. “We had record yields in 2015 so the 2016 crop was a return to trend line yields or slightly below that in some areas.” he says. “As a whole the fresh supply out of Wisconsin is very balanced with our demand and we should have adequate supplies through mid summer.”

Pricing looks stable

Meanwhile pricing continues to stay even as well. “Things have been incredibly steady here for the last two months and I think that’ll continue until we get into summer,” he says. “Pricing has hardly moved at all. We get little blips here and there but everything is pretty settled in for now.”
