Research reveals best green asparagus varieties for temperate climates

Optimal use of Limgroup range
In addition to choosing the right plot and preparing the soil, deciding which variety of asparagus to grow is a crucial decision that should be taken before the new plot is planted.

Limgroup has categorised asparagus growing according to the cultivation method and product specific characteristics. This article provides information about green asparagus varieties shown to be best for production in temperate climates.

Green asparagus varieties in temperate climate zones

Aspalim
This variety combines very high yields with very early production. It has excellent, tightly closed tips and is therefore very suitable for forced cultivation methods. Aspalim has a very high production potential, excellent
quality and very good thickness. Even when harvested in warm conditions, the tip of Aspalim remains firmly closed. The variety has outstanding spear thickness which remains more or less constant during its productive life.

Gijnlim
Gijnlim can be harvested slightly later, but is still a very early variety. Gijnlim is highly suitable for both white and green asparagus production in temperate climate zones. Gijnlim has a very high production potential and exceptionally reliable quality for growing green asparagus.

Avalim
Similar to Gijnlim, Avalim is a variety that is ideal for white and green asparagus production in a temperate climate. Avalim is an early variety that produces good spear thickness and quality.

It also has an excellent flavour, making it perfect for selling direct from the farm. Avalim has naturally strong, resistant foliage and good foliage traits, which make this variety perfect for organic growing methods.

Portlim
This is a late variety. When growing green asparagus, achieving a spread of the early and late varieties is important for a long season with asparagus
of consistent, uniform quality. Portlim is a vigorous and robust variety with good yields and a long, profitable productive life.

Portlim has a high production potential, excellent quality and very good thickness. Even when harvested in warm or hot conditions, the tip of Portlim remains firmly closed. The variety has outstanding spear thickness which remains more or less constant during its productive life.

Xenolim
Xenolim is a 100% anthocyanin-free hybrid. It has a different appearance to the “normal” green asparagus varieties. This variety is particularly highly valued in Germany thanks to its bright green colour and magnificently shaped spears.

Xenolim has a very high production potential, excellent quality and very good thickness. Xenolim has very well-closed tips so it offers extreme flexibility in harvesting.
