Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Wardha, found a fruitseller, S Maratrao Tayade, guilty of using Ethephon (a plant growth regulator), a banned chemical for artificially ripening bananas, and sentenced him to undergo one year rigorous jail and Rs 1,000 fine.

In case he fails to pay the fine, the guilty man will be liable for an additional month's imprisonment.

The case was first handled in 2010 by the then food inspector G T Satkar. He had found that Tayade, who owns Siddhu Fruit Company, fruit market, Itwara in Wardha, was illegally ripening bananas using Ethephon. Tayade used to dip the fruits in a 20-litre bucket filled with the chemical.
