South African Mango Association expects a better crop

According to the South African Mango Growers Association, growers reported an all-round better harvest compared to the last harvest which was heavily affected after severe hail resulted in a 17 per cent loss of the total crop.

Due to climate conditions such as the drought, high temperatures and hail, the season began two weeks earlier than expected and less disease was reported this year, which resulted in better quality fruit, higher pack-outs and increased fruit supply.

So far this season there has been slightly less consumer and retailer demand for mangoes, due to reasons such as continued pressure on household budgets following the festive season, and the start of the new school and work year.
