No oversupply
Rony points out that it is very difficult in Belgium to switch from conventional to organic. "The transitional period lasts for two years and in that time you receive the price for conventional. It is an important decision which may temporarily mean higher costs than benefits. We have noticed that many are reluctant. Fortunately, there are still growers involved in the conversion process, because having access to more product is always welcome. We should, of course, avoid creating oversupply, but for now we don't need to be afraid of that."
Communication
Why do producers choose BioVibe? "The main reason why producers get in touch with us and stay with us is because we are flexible. This is something that the producers themselves highlight. They like that we don't sign contracts for a few years, but that they are given a certain freedom to supply their product. They can also back off if they want." He points out that they strive for good prices. "It is obviously attractive to join an organization that fights for that. Our entrepreneurs, the Vanhaeren family, are themselves producers, so they know what they strive for: good quality products at an affordable price." As another important point, Rony mentions the fact that they remain constantly in touch with the producers. "Good communication is something we consider a top priority. With us, there are conversations about everything."
Prices for organic
"The prices for organic products have fallen considerably in comparison with those of, say, ten years ago," states the trader. "There will always be a distinction between organic and conventional, but they are no longer twice as high. It is increasingly a matter of supply and demand, not as much as in the case of conventional produce, but still." The prospects for 2017 are good for both him and the Vanhaeren brothers. "We and our growers believe in organic products and in conveying our passion to our customers."
