Germans turn to ginger to fight winter bugs

Winter time is always peak season for ginger in Germany, and that, along with consumers turning to the exotic root for its health benefits and more and more recipes using ginger making their way into the mainstream, has meant that demand is booming.

When asked why he thought that demand seems to peak during the winter season, Joep Van Koevorden from Bio Tropic GmbH responded; "I am assuming that the strong demand is caused by the lower temperatures, when ginger is often consumed as a wintertime tea. People also start consuming more and more kiwis and citrus, as well as ginger, to stave off colds and flu."

The company is currently selling Peruvian ginger, but the first new crop from China is expected to arrive in the port of Rotterdam in approximately 2-5 weeks time. The company also sourcing its ginger from Costa Rica. Joep shared that there have been no supply issues this season.

Bio Tropic GmbH recently launched a juice for the German market, made with fresh Peruvian ginger, which is both a social project and one to help consumers get that extra portion of ginger. The ginger is grown by smallholders in the Amazon rainforest and the juice is a combination of apples and oranges with ginger juice, which is organic and free of additives, aromatics and preservatives.

Joep also mentioned that another root vegetable, which has been steadily gaining demand in the last four years, is fresh turmeric, sourced from Peru and India for Bio Tropic.

"I am not sure of the precise reason why we have seen such a growth in demand, but I do know that turmeric starting to make an appearance in magazines and recipes around that time, which must have helped. Traditionally used primarily for adding colour to certain dishes, it has also proven to be extremely healthy."
