Armenian officials deny claims of banana import monopoly

The State Revenue Committee of Armenia denied MP Nikol Pashinyan’s statement that the banana import monopoly in Armenia had not been broken up over the period of the current government’s activity.

According to media reports, Catherine Group, owned by Mihran Poghosyan, Armenia’s former chief bailiff, has been the sole importer of bananas for years.

The committee says that 48 companies imported bananas in 2016 and that if Pashinyan has evidence, it is ready to cooperate with the lawmaker in scrutinizing the matter. The committee officials say that they will continue removing obstacles for banana importers.

Nikol Pashinyan, who is the leader of the Civil Contract spoke at the first congress of the alliance, and said that Karen Karapetyan’s government has failed to solve the banana monopoly problem.
