Australia may soon export avocados to Japan & Thailand

Avocado growers in Western Australia are excited at the possibility future opportunities to export to Japan and Thailand after Avocados Australia chief executive, John Tyas, stated that Japan has agreed to undertake an audit of WA avocado export packers this coming February.

Thailand has also joined Japan and plans to undertake an audit of the WA avocado export packers in August. While Australia currently only produces less than 2 per cent of the world’s avocados, this move could increase the country's standing in the global market.

In 2015-16 Singapore and Malaysia were Australia’s main avocado export markets.

Mr Tyas said it was “very likely” WA growers would have market access to Japan and Thailand for their next season.

“Thailand has recently provided a draft new protocol for Australian Hass avocado exports from Western Australia, based on conditional non-host status for Mediterranean Fruit fly,” Mr Tyas said.

“Further review is required, but from an initial review the protocol appears to reflect our requests and will be workable for Australian exporters.”
