Guimara, Philippines mango production continues recovery

For 2016, PSA-Guimaras preliminary data showed that, while production slowed down compared to previous year, it’s still way up on its production of seven years ago (2008-2014).

Guimaras has a total land area of 60,457 hectares and 8.6 percent of this or 5,202.8 hectares are planted with mango. The fruit crop is planted in all the five municipalities of the province.

As of 2015, PSA data said there were 137,900 bearing mango trees in the province, of which 89.6 percent or 123,500 are of the carabao mango variety, which is considered one of the best mango varieties because of its tender taste and sweet aroma.

Guimaras mangoes, which have been declared as seeds and pulp weevil-free, are allowed to enter foreign markets such as United States and Australia. They have also made their way as far as the White House and Buckingham Palace.
