Fiji: Banana prices return to normal after cyclone

Banana prices seem to have normalized at the Suva market in Fiji after Tropical Cyclone Winston sent prices rising due to a lack of supply. Laisane Tokikivuna, who has been a market vendor for the past 15 years, said she used to buy a box of bananas for $70 compared with $150 for a box after TC Winston.

"As the farmers are reducing the price then we will do the same at the market," she said.

When the prices of the bananas were high then she used to make about $300, but now that prices are back to normal she makes around $600.

"I have had more customers buying bananas now compared with when they were expensive," said Ms Tokikivuna.

She marks the prices on the bananas according to the size and reports that prices of bananas now range from $2- $10.
