“Difficult to trade with high leek prices”

There has been a good demand and high prices on the leek market for weeks already. “There is plenty of volume, we have about 400 tonnes every market day. There is a good demand from various European directions. It is therefore an ideal market situation for cultivators. However, it is fairly difficult for traders to do business, because customers are often reserved about prices,” says Guy de Meyer from Demargro.

Getting a sense of the market situation
According to De Meyer, the prices have been high since December. “Various buyers think the prices are too high, and it is therefore difficult to estimate how much to buy as a trader. It is also not good to have too much stock when prices drop. But not having enough is also not an option. It is therefore difficult to estimate, and we have to carefully get a sense of the market situation each day.”

It is still difficult to predict how the next few weeks will turn out. De Meyer indicates that the weather forecast is wintery, and that this will certainly have an influence on the leek market. “If it is colder throughout Europe, demand will only increase further. We will have to wait and see what this will do to prices. A higher price will only make trading more difficult.”
