NZ sees hottest average temperature ever recorded

Record setting temperatures were reached this year in Tauranga. According to the latest NIWA Annual Climate Summary the year's average of 15.9C was the hottest since logging started back in 1913. Overall the average temperature was one degree higher than normal.

While it may have been the hottest year, Tauranga also saw its second lowest sunshine hours in 2016, logging a total of 2020 hours of sun which is around 86% the usual hours, which affected some berry farmers who saw delayed harvests.

A New Zealand Kiwifruit Growers spokesperson told us that farmers in the country are expecting lower volumes of kiwi this year due to the weather, but the impact is yet to be known.

"While it is very early in the season to estimate total volumes with any accuracy, indications are that volumes for the Green variety of kiwifruit will be down in comparison to last year's harvest.

"It is also important to note that volume forecasts move a lot during the season and we generally don't know the actual volumes until well into harvest."
