Rwanda dry spell causing banana price hike

According Drocella Uwajeneza, a trader, scarcity in bananas has sent the price of banana fingers in Rwanda rising higher. Last week they were at a price of around USD $0.37/kg but have risen since then by $0.06/kg to $0.43/kg.

“The yields have not been good in key banana producing areas because of a prolonged dry spell in the last four months of last year,” Uwajeneza said.

While the increased price is great for farmers who could get their fruit to market and make up partly for the reduced production this year, it is damaging to consumers, who ultimately pay the price.
