High commissioner impressed with Nyae Nyae conservation
"I was very impressed by the healthy state of the gardens and the variety of fruit and vegetables being produced in these conditions. The ability to use solar-powered pumps to water the gardens and the skills the villagers have clearly acquired, have turned them into avid gardeners," said Lomas.
The project is being implemented under the European Climate Change Project.
Like the rest of Namibia, the conservancy experiences water shortages which together with the scorching sun severely hamper crop farming and livestock production. The EU initiated the project in the conservancy almost two years ago, specifically for this reason.
The second year of implementation is almost complete and the results have been very encouraging. The project is aimed at improving food security through diversified activities in the community. With a bumper harvest of Devils Claw, ever-increasing artisanal craft sales as well as small-scale gardening and livestock management taking off, the community has become a hub of activity.
