New Zealand: Horticulture continues amazing growth

Since 2014 horticulture in New Zealand has seen a 40 percent growth in export earnings says a new report. This is linked to a decrease in tariffs by the government on exported produce by 22 percent since 2012.

The report, launched at an event in Wellington today by The New Zealand Horticulture Export Authority (HEA) and Horticulture New Zealand, says horticultural produce exporters paid an estimated $190 million in tariffs, a decrease of 22 percent from 2012’s figures of $241 million.

New Zealand exports a little over $3.4 billion in total which consists of mostly fruit and vegetables.

"New Zealand’s wealth is driven by our exports, and anything the Government can do to improve our ability to export adds to our country's wealth," says Chapman, the Horticulture New Zealand chief executive.

"It is important that exporters and Government jointly recognise the risks posed by non-tariff barriers, and take appropriate steps to maintain horticulture’s goal of being a $10 billion industry by 2020," he said.
