With good production expectations and price but with the uncertainty of not knowing what measures the US government could take regarding the import of vegetables, producers have already started harvesting the first cuts of vegetables, specifically cucumbers.
In the case of chilli and tomato crops, growers prepare labor and export permits prior to the activities that will take place on the first weeks of December.
Hypatia Indira Garcia Lopez, representative of the AARSP's Department of Statistics and Economic Studies, mentioned that "they began with the first cucumber harvests and export shipments but we stopped at this first stage."
She noted that everything has been flowing as far as the performance and health of crops, indicating that there might be good results. "We'll have to see what happens from here to the next harvest, and that there are no pests or problems," she explained.
Like last season, they have been able to establish 6,000 hectares in the region according to the plant irrigation modules report.
By the closing of the month of October they had established 2,000 hectares of tomato, similar to what they had during these same dates in October last year. Chili pepper plantations report 1,550 hectares planted, and 42 hectares of cucumber. A severe decline has been seen compared to last year when they planted 80 hectares.
Because of this there was shorter period during the first this product's first harvests. "A few pending records from the month of November are missing, and with them we are already thinking that we will be close to the 6,000 hectares."
Measures
Taking into account that there are Sinaloan producers who export to the US, who although the price of the dollar could benefit the price of their products, he said it is uncertain what might happen this season.
"It's a very complicated issue, we are seeing that the producer is excited, more than anything, by the conditions of the exchange rate," he explained.
"The problems that they may have when marketing or during proper exporting are unknown. Hopefully they will be able to get their product through before the new Government comes in and begins to take actions, but for now we do not know what can happen."
Garcia Lopez mentioned that the existence of a good exchange rate benefits them, but that the problem would occur if their neighbouring country to the North were to limit its exports.
