Hurricane Matthew affects transport

Hurricane Matthew has caused major transportation disruptions for much of the US, with more than 4,200 flights cancelled between Wednesday and Saturday. The impact for fresh produce imports is expected to be limited. “Because of airport closures, there may be a temporary glitch, but everything will be back to normal soon,” according to Bob Von Rohr with Sunny Valley International.

Ports are closed as well, which means arrival of produce by vessel are also delayed. Sergio Palala with Splendid Products imports mangoes from Brazil and doesn’t expect any impact for the availability of mangos in the stores. “Inventory is so high at the moment that we won’t notice an interruption of a couple days,” he mentioned.

The impact for growers is likely to be much more significant. Heavy winds as well as rainfall of 15 inches or more could be devastating. At this point in time, there is no information available on the effects as the storm is still moving over the coast.
