Mario Iuzzolino, Verdi Import:

First Spanish broccoli surprisingly good quality

Verdi Import has started its Spanish broccoli season. “It is true some Dutch product is still available, but because of the unprecedentedly high temperatures, quality has become one large question mark. On average, Spanish broccoli is slightly better than Dutch broccoli,” says Mario Iuzzolino of Verdi Import.

“The volumes from Spain will be somewhat larger than last season. Prices are around 3.50 euro, which is still a bit mediocre. Temperatures have been high in Spain as well, which is now resulting in a remarkably early vegetable supply. We also already have plenty of greenhouse vegetables from Spain, but because of the presence of Dutch product, we have chosen to wait before entering the market with those,” Iuzzolino continues.

“The warm weather also had its influence on the stone fruit market. We are looking back on a fine season for Spanish stone fruit, with perhaps slightly smaller volumes, but that should not spoil our fun. We have had a good Spanish melon season. Mid-October we will start our kaki persimmon season. Supply for that will once again be larger than before.”
