Bolivia: Emergency due to the loss of 50,000 pineapple saplings

According to Radio Santa Cruz, part of the Erbol network, pineapple producers in the province of Guarayos, in the department of Santa Cruz, have declared a state of emergency due to the loss of 50,000 saplings as a result of the fires recorded in the last two weeks.

The president of the Association of Pineapple Producers from the province of Guarayos, Genaro Moirenda, said producers didn't believe they could grow the crops affected due to drought affecting the province and many of the producing areas in Santa Cruz.

He said some farmers had lost all their capital and asked the authorities to provide the support for this sector. Each producer has between 10 and 15 productive hectares.

They have asked for water pumps for each plot and flexible loans for small producers so that there is no shortage of sweet pineapple. He suggested that the municipality issue a law declaring the area affected a disaster area.
