Despite Brexit vote lowering demand from UK

“Strong start Chinese sweet potato export season”

“The sweet potato harvest has recently started in Shandong province. Total output is expected to decline due to the extreme cold weather we experience in early Spring. As a result, prices have gone up slightly compared to last year. Overall, we are happy with the market performance in the start of the season,” says Jenny Ma of Shandong Jining Green Living International Trade.

“Sweet potatoes are gaining popularity in China. People’s eating habits are changing and people are recognizing the nutritional value of the sweet potato. Increasing domestic demand is another factor that has been pushing the price up.”

Growing exports
“Our exports are steadily increasing and we are now exporting to a number of overseas markets. Thanks to improvements in our quality control system and storage facilities our total exports have quadrupled in recent years. The UK and the Netherlands have become particularly strong export markets for us. Exports to the UK have been facing problems since the country’s vote to leave the EU, mainly due to the devaluation of the Pound. The UK is a large re-exporter of sweet potatoes, and it will have to be seen how the situation plays out on the European market. Perhaps in the future, there will more changes to come. For now, however, effects could be temporarily.”

Europe ready for roasted, ready-to-eat sweet potatoes
“Frozen roasted sweet potatoes are a specialty product of our company. These sweet potatoes are ready-to-eat and can be prepared in the oven in restaurants or at people’s homes. The product is fully prepared, and only need to be heated up by the client. We wash the sweet potatoes and roast them at our facilities. After that, the potatoes are frozen to minus 18 degrees and exported as such. After successful tests on the Korean and Japanese market, we have decided to launch the product in Europe. It is a new product, and it will take some time develop the market. All our sweet potatoes are going through a rigorous screening procedure before they are processed. The product stays fresh and is convenient in its use. Especially in winter, when the sweet potatoes are hot and ready-to-eat. Sweet potatoes contain plenty of proteins, vitamins, carotene and Vitamin C. We make sure that we protect the product's nourishing value up to the greatest extend possible. I believe that roasted ready-to-eat sweet potatoes will become a popular product in Europe in the coming years as a high-quality, nutritious convenience snack.”
