Despite the bad weather in recent months the German asparagus harvest for 2016 will be good. The German Bureau for Statistics (Destatis) has shared after the first estimate that the asparagus harvest will be around 119.000 tonnes. This is 5% more than last year.
The area which asparagus could be harvested from is around 22,000 hectares in 2016. That is a new record size (+7% compared to last year). Both the area and the harvest are around 13% higher than the six year average. With 26,800 tonnes most asparagus are sticked in the state of Lower Saxony, followed by Bavaria and Brandenburg with 19,600 tonnes each.
The strawberry harvest, however, has suffered from the weather condition. The expected strawberry harvest through Germany is estimated at around 119,000 tonnes, which is 26% less than last year and 21% less than in the last six years. There was not just a drop in strawberry harvest, the open ground area also declined by 12%. This was partially due to the weather situation and the low growers' prices.
Two thirds of the strawberry harvest was produced in a states Baden-Wurttemberg (19,000 tonnes, -34% compared to last year), Lower Saxony (33,900 tonnes - 22%) and North Rhine-Westphalia (26,100 tonnes - 17%).
The current figures on area and harvest for asparagus and strawberries are first estimates based on the representative research done in June. They therefore supply information on general tendencies for the year 2016. Definite figures will only be publicised after autumn.
