Swiss vegetables: Higher prices and more imports due to rain

During the first 5 months of the year, Switzerland imported 20% more vegetables than in 2015 (210,000 tons compared to 180,000 tons). The vegetable growers union say that because of heavy rain and many fields being flooded, the situation “is not easy”. Harvest was difficult and farmers could not replant or reseed.

Lettuce, courgettes, brocoli and organic vegetables suffered in particular. A decreased harvest meant more was imported. This was reflected in prices, particularly for cauliflower, brocoli, salad and chard, which were higher at the end of the winter, compared to 2015.

However, the situation is not critical and if the summer continues as it has begun quantity is sure to improve over the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, Georg Bregy from the Swiss Fruit-Union says that the situation for fruit producers is “demanding”. There was a lack of sun over the spring, and currently fruit fly is attacking the fruits. However, demand and quality are still good.
