Trend for regional produce continues

Germany: Mediocre asparagus season

Midsummer, 24 June is the end of the asparagus time. Traditionally that is the day that the last asparagus is cut in Germany. Overall, the 2016 asparagus season in Bavaria was a season without major ups and downs.

With an acreage of 3,300 hectares Bavaria has set a new record, but due to the cold spring a record harvest isn’t expected this year. The asparagus supply was especially low before the May holidays; this caused an increase in the prices this year.

“The trend in regional fresh asparagus has continued. Asparagus lovers wait for the German asparagus and prefer to buy them directly from the farm. Foreign asparagus are increasingly less popular with the consumers,” states Theo Däxl of the Farmers Association Bavaria.

Now Bavarian asparagus farmers hope for rain, so the asparagus plants can grow and store enough energy for a beautiful harvest next year. And a good winter that tapers of in February. “For the asparagus season 2017 a mild spring with even temperatures and occasional showers of rain is desirable," continues Däxl.

The plant physiology of the asparagus puts the end of the asparagus season at 24 June. The asparagus plant needs sufficient time to store nutrients for winter and the next harvest.
