Weather brings tight supply on onions

It’s a somewhat tight supply for onions currently, mostly weather related. “Everything seems a little high right now. It’s been like that for a while,” said Gary Orvis of Heartland Produce. Texas saw too much rain at the beginning of their season and California and Arizona experienced high temperatures.

Quality has been good amongst the inconsistency due to the weather to wait for everything to get going again. “We finished up the Controlled atmosphere onions and whatever’s left in storage,” said Orvis. “The California flat sweets and CAs are really nice.” Starting after the holiday weekend, he says they’ll be moving into shipping Washington Walla Walla’s.

Growers between New Mexico, Oregon, and Arizona, plus Colorado by August, will begin harvesting their crops of jumbo yellow, Spanish and red onions. Orvis remarked prices are in the mid teens for sweet onions (delivered) as well as jumbo yellow, white and red onions for a 25lb and 50# bag.

Orvis said there’s only a small market within their customer base that chooses organic onions. “It all depends. Some stores do well and some don’t,” he said. “I think it’s the nature of the (buyer) if they believe in it or not. You have to pay money for it.”
