Martin and Rita Prins, Cresco:

"Mixed packages are real winners"

There used to be more traditional peaks in the cress sales, but it still happens a lot, remarks Martin and Rita Prins of commercial cultivation company Cresco from Honselersdijk. "Of course the beautiful weekends boost the sale, but there is no visible trend. Not every year is the same. On the one hand the summer ensures good business and the demand for cress increases, and on the other hand many people go on holidays and barbecue."



Real popular products at Cresco are the mixed packages. "We offer all specialities in a 'Possibilities Box'. It is a new approach for us, because we pack everything per dish. That takes a bit of work, but is does satisfy the demand," says Rita. Recently the customers were surprised with a new poster. "We chose something different than a traditional product poster. With this colourful eye catcher we want to show the market what possibilities we offer."



So meantime the competition in the European cress business has increased. "There are a few major market contributors abroad that have specialized in the cress business. It cannot be stopped. We do what we do best. Our company has been specialized in the artisan cress cultivation. Even though we have modernized our company over the years, the special cultivation method developed by the Prins family in the beginning is still the base of our cress cultivation," says Martin. 



"We have almost sixty different products in our assortment. This year the products Micro Red Chard, Micro Red Pak Soy, and Snow Pea have sold really well, but the complete assortment is our selling point. Of some products you sell only a couple of boxes of others pallets per day. Every single one is a sensation regarding taste, smell, and colour, making them the perfect addition in the assortment of our customers," concludes Rita.
