Turkey: Temperature rises, veg prices drop

The Antalya region produces most of Turkey’s vegetables; as the temperature rises there, vegetable prices at Antalya’s wholesale hall are falling. Manager of the wholesale hall, Dilaver Demir said: ‘’The last week has been exceptionally hot, usually growers harvest and bring their produce every two to three days, now growers are bringing produce everyday. Therefore, as supply outstrips demand, prices have dropped.’’

Antalya’s wholesale hall is Turkey’s biggest, and from there fruit and vegetables are sent to Turkey’s 81 provinces. Greenhouse produce season has finished and now products are being brought from the plains.

Demir provided information on the latest prices:

‘’Bell peppers are sold for at least 0.70 lira and at most 1 lira. Tomatoes are priced between 1 to 1.5 lira. Cucumbers are between 0.50 lira and 1 lira, courgettes 0.70 to 1.19 lira and aubergines cost between 0.50 to 1 lira.’’
Compared to prices at the wholesale market in June last year, tomatoes are cheaper by 13 percent, aubergines by 38 percent, cucumbers by 42 percent and courgettes by 55 percent.

Whereas watermelon prices by the kilo are 12 percent more expensive and melons cost 100 percent more per kilo, than in the same period last year.

This increase is connected to Ramadan, as melons are a popular choice as part of the evening meal that breaks the fast.
