Cesar Morocho, from Frutas Piuranas:

"Peru: "Pre-campaign begins before seedless grape varieties promoted"

Even though Peru's grape campaign starts in late September, the pre-campaign and preparations are beginning in the following weeks. "Last year we had a somewhat difficult season, mainly because of the high temperatures we experienced. This year we are having better weather conditions, so we believe it will be a better year and, since we are responsible producers, we are taking preventive measures and getting ready now, "said Cesar Morocho, from Frutas Piuranas.

"If we analyze the current situation, the total hectares devoted to grape production has not increased much. We've noticed a big change in the production of Red Globe, as it has been replaced by seedless varieties or, in some cases, by blueberries. This has happened because the market has been saturated by this variety. Producers haven't had good returns in recent seasons because of an oversupply," says Morocho.

Unlike the trend in the production of Red Globe, the seedless varieties have experienced an increase in production that has gone hand in hand with the market's demand and that has maintained a balanced competition. "There is a lot of demand for our grapes, but the market is a little unpredictable and we have to take into account the production of other producing countries. In the specific case of Chile, our main competitor, we have to wait to see how their offer is. Let's not forget that the harvest and export of grapes in the northern region of Peru, in Piura specifically, takes place between the months of October and December, "concluded Morocho.
